To celebrate our heritage of Lake Winnebago and its waterways, I compelled some brief worthwhile information pertaining to its navigational history and importantly current updates of the river.

This year, Neenah Nodaway Yacht is celebrating its 150th year, established 1864.  One of the oldest yacht Clubs in the country.  Learn about their past with History in the Park displays at Riverside Park in Neenah and see a sailboat representing the type sailed years ago.  Also there is going to be a float in the Memorial Parade.  Tour all different types of sailboats at the Neenah Harbor at the Sailing Open House, June 14th 10-2pm.  NNYC offers a sailing school for both adults and youth.  Always welcome, with no experience necessary, you can crew with a Tuesday night race boat.  www.nnyc.org or e-mail SailPromotion@nnyc.org

Neenah Lighthouse: To go back in time, in the 1830s the Menominee Indians would hold their council meetings at the entrance point of the Neenah Harbor.  Neenah was an Indian word for water. The Federal Corp. of Engineers in the 1880s dredged and widened this entrance. In 1929 this entrance point was donated to the City of Neenah by Helen Kimberly Stuart to build a lighthouse.  Neenah Kimberly Point Lighthouse was built in 1945 and funded by the Kimberly family, founders of Kimberly-Clark Corp. since 1872.  At the cost of $7,500. The tower is 49 feet and topped with a sailboat weathervane.

Menasha Lighthouse was the first lighthouse on Lake Winnebago but with a very short history that I would like to share with you.  It was built in 1855 for $6,000, 20 x 30 feet, 2 floors, fireplaces in each room and an enclosed stone spiral staircase to a great iron lantern. Built on the North end of Lighthouse Reef.  Jerry Cowling the lighthouse keeper lived there with his family for four years.  The lighthouse had a sad ending, with a severe life threating incident with Mr. Cowling the lighthouse was never lit again. In 1880 skaters set fire to the building and with the water wearing away on the remains it is non-exiting, but some say that in early spring with very clean water a platform is visible.

Mercury Marine celebrates their 75th Anniversary.  In 1939 Carl Kiekhafer founder of Mercury Marine assumed control of a bankrupt marine engine plant who had 300 rejected outboard engines in Cedarburg, WI.  This engine called the Thor, the god of Thunder.  His intent at first was to transform these engines for the dairy industry.  He grow up on a family farm in Mequon.  Instead he redesign the engines into outboards.  1946 moved Keikhafer Marine to Fond du Lac.  In 1971 it became Mercury Marine.  Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac employees over 3000 and 5,300 worldwide.

The United State Power Squadron celebrates their 100th Anniversary.  This organization started in Boston in 1914 committed to boating safety and education.  Started by Charles Chapman, who realized the owners needed instructions on how to operate safely and with confidence. At first, the principle object of the squadron was to be of service to the Navy in time of emergency.  During World War 1 the USPS trained men for the naval coastal defense.  These volunteers teach boating safety classes and free vessel safety checks.  USPS has over 60,000 members and over 450 squadrons across the country. Oshkosh Sail & Power Squadron 739-4949.

The Fox River Navigational System Authority was created to oversee the management of the Fox River Locks constructed in the 1850s.   Restoration of the 16 locks started in 2006.  The Kaukauna locks are scheduled to be finished in 2015 with extensive work yet to be done on a pedestrian bridge and one Kaukauna bridge.  This means that all the locks will be restored except the Rapid Croche Boat Transfer and cleansing station which has been sealed since 1988.  Lake Winnebago to DePere, within 30 miles it drops 180 feet, the approx. distance of Niagara Falls.

The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway has restoration plans for the lock tender houses along the Fox River, built 1892-1927:  turn Cedar, Little chute Locks into overnight vacation rentals, demolish the Menasha lock due to extensive deterioration and mold.  They are preparing to have a 62 foot paddle wheel On the Loos in the Parkway to tour the Fox Valley.  July 12-18th, reservations 920-707-2965.

Friends of the Fox Annual meeting, Saturday, May 17, 2-6pm at Riverview Country Club in Appleton

Moving Forward on the Beautiful Fox River.  Reviewing information on the completion of the Kaukauna locks and boat lift transfer and their goals for 2014.  E-mail a RSVP to manney@heritageparkway.org. To promote navigation on the lock system, the Friends of the Fox have placed safety buoys for the lower Fox River to Little Chute.   Show your support and join as a member.

The Eureka Lock near Berlin has been reconstructed by the Berlin Boat Club. The DNR closed this lock in 2003 due to flood damage.  With private donations, completely funded, it re-opened in 2013 with 454 lockages.  To the best of their knowledge the Berlin Boat Club is the only club in United States which operates and maintains a lock system. Along this upper Fox River is the Fox River Runners Club who install, remove, purchase and maintain navigation buoys from Eureka Lock to Lake Butte des Morts. There will be a topographic map available on the FOF website and also in paper form at Menasha Marina and other designated areas. This will cover the area from Lake Butte des Morts to Berlin.
